Classic Ground Beef Tacos Recipe

Classic ground beef tacos are a go-to weeknight meal that never goes out of style. They’re quick to make, full of flavor, and easy to customize. The base is well-seasoned ground beef, tucked into crispy taco shells or soft tortillas, then topped with shredded lettuce, cheese, tomatoes, and whatever else you like. This recipe makes 8 tacos, enough to serve 4 people.

Ingredients

For the beef filling:

  • 500g (1 lb) ground beef

  • 1 small onion, finely chopped

  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

  • 1 tablespoon chili powder

  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin

  • ½ teaspoon paprika

  • ½ teaspoon dried oregano

  • ½ teaspoon salt

  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper

  • ½ cup beef stock or water

  • 1 tablespoon tomato paste (optional for extra richness)

For serving:

  • 8 taco shells or small soft tortillas

  • Shredded lettuce

  • Diced tomatoes

  • Shredded cheddar or Monterey Jack cheese

  • Sour cream

  • Hot sauce or salsa

  • Fresh cilantro and lime wedges (optional)

Cooking the Beef

Place a skillet over medium heat. Add the ground beef and break it up as it cooks. Once it starts to brown, add the chopped onion and cook for 4–5 minutes until the onion is soft.

Stir in the garlic, chili powder, cumin, paprika, oregano, salt, and pepper. Cook for 1–2 minutes to toast the spices.

Add the beef stock and tomato paste if using. Stir well and let it simmer for about 5–7 minutes, until the liquid has mostly cooked off and the beef is coated in a rich sauce.

Remove from heat and keep warm.

Warming the Shells

If using taco shells, heat them in the oven at 180°C (350°F) for 5 minutes until crisp. If using soft tortillas, wrap them in foil and warm them in the oven or heat them individually in a dry skillet.

Assembling the Tacos

Spoon the beef mixture into the taco shells. Top with shredded lettuce, cheese, diced tomatoes, and any extras you like—sour cream, salsa, avocado, or hot sauce.

Serving

Serve immediately with lime wedges on the side for a fresh finish.

Classic ground beef tacos are all about flavor and fun. They’re easy to make and let everyone at the table build their own, just the way they like them.
