Gnocchi in tomato basil sauce is a comforting Italian dish made with soft, potato-based dumplings simmered in a simple, fragrant tomato sauce infused with garlic and fresh basil. The gnocchi soak up the flavors, creating a hearty yet delicate meal. This recipe serves 3 to 4.
Ingredients
For the Gnocchi (or use store-bought):
500g store-bought gnocchi or homemade gnocchi
For the Tomato Basil Sauce:
2 tablespoons olive oil
2–3 garlic cloves, finely chopped
400g canned crushed tomatoes or tomato purée
½ teaspoon sugar (optional, to balance acidity)
Salt and black pepper to taste
A handful of fresh basil leaves, torn or chopped
Grated Parmesan cheese for serving (optional)
Instructions
1. Cook the Gnocchi
Bring a pot of salted water to a boil. Add the gnocchi and cook until they float to the surface—about 2 to 3 minutes. Remove with a slotted spoon and set aside.
2. Make the Sauce
In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add garlic and sauté for 30 seconds until fragrant (don’t let it brown). Pour in the crushed tomatoes and stir.
3. Simmer the Sauce
Add salt, pepper, and a pinch of sugar if needed. Let the sauce simmer for 10–15 minutes, stirring occasionally. Once thickened slightly, stir in the fresh basil.
4. Combine with Gnocchi
Add the cooked gnocchi to the sauce. Gently toss to coat and let them simmer together for 1–2 minutes so they absorb the flavor.
5. Serve
Serve hot, topped with grated Parmesan cheese and a few extra basil leaves if you like. A drizzle of olive oil or a spoon of ricotta on top also works beautifully.
Tips for Extra Flavor
Add a splash of cream or a tablespoon of butter for a richer sauce
Stir in some red chili flakes for gentle heat
Top with pan-toasted breadcrumbs for a little crunch
Gnocchi in tomato basil sauce is warm, soft, and filled with real flavor.
