Preparation Time: 20 minutes
Cooking Time: 10 minutes (plus grilling time at the table)
Serving Size: 4
Ingredients
1 500g beef ribeye or sirloin, thinly sliced
2 tablespoons soy sauce
2 tablespoons sake
1 tablespoon mirin
1 tablespoon sugar
1 clove garlic, minced
1 teaspoon grated ginger
1 tablespoon sesame oil
1 medium onion, sliced into rings
1 red bell pepper, sliced
1 zucchini, sliced
1 cup mushrooms, halved
1 small head lettuce, leaves separated (for wrapping)
2 tablespoons toasted sesame seeds
Homemade Yakiniku Sauce
3 tablespoons soy sauce
2 tablespoons mirin
1 tablespoon sake
1 tablespoon sugar
1 clove garlic, finely grated
1 teaspoon grated ginger
1 teaspoon sesame oil
1 teaspoon rice vinegar
1 tablespoon toasted sesame seeds
Method
In a bowl, mix soy sauce, sake, mirin, sugar, garlic, ginger, and sesame oil to make a marinade. Add the sliced beef and coat well, letting it marinate for 15 minutes. For the sauce, combine all sauce ingredients in a small bowl and stir until the sugar dissolves; set aside. Heat a tabletop grill or a large grill pan. Grill beef slices quickly for 1-2 minutes per side until just cooked, then set aside. Grill vegetables until tender but still crisp. To eat, place a piece of grilled beef and some vegetables in a lettuce leaf, drizzle with the homemade yakiniku sauce, sprinkle with sesame seeds, and wrap before enjoying. Serve with steamed rice and extra sauce for dipping.
