Hawaiian Dinner Rolls Recipe

Hawaiian dinner rolls are soft, fluffy, and slightly sweet buns that have become a favorite for family meals, holiday feasts, and sandwiches. Unlike regular rolls, these have a touch of pineapple juice in the dough, which gives them their signature sweetness and pillowy texture. They are golden on top, tender inside, and pair beautifully with savory dishes or even as a base for mini sliders. Baking them at home fills your kitchen with a warm, sweet aroma, and the taste is far fresher than store-bought rolls.

Cooking Time: About 2 hours 30 minutes (including rising time)

Serving: 12 rolls

Ingredients

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour (plus extra for kneading)

  • 1/3 cup granulated sugar

  • 1 packet (2 1/4 tsp) active dry yeast

  • 1/2 cup pineapple juice, warmed to about 110°F (43°C)

  • 1/4 cup milk, warmed

  • 2 large eggs, room temperature

  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted (plus extra for brushing)

  • 1 tsp salt

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, dissolve yeast in the warm pineapple juice and let sit for 5–7 minutes until foamy.

  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, and salt. Make a well in the center.

  3. Add yeast mixture, warm milk, eggs, and melted butter into the flour. Mix until dough starts to come together.

  4. Knead dough on a lightly floured surface for 8–10 minutes (or with a stand mixer and dough hook for 6 minutes) until smooth and elastic.

  5. Place dough in a greased bowl, cover with a clean towel, and let rise in a warm spot for 1–1 1/2 hours, or until doubled in size.

  6. Punch down dough and divide into 12 equal pieces. Shape each piece into a smooth ball.

  7. Arrange dough balls in a greased 9×13-inch baking dish. Cover again and let rise for 45 minutes, until puffy.

  8. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Brush rolls with melted butter.

  9. Bake for 20–22 minutes, or until golden brown on top.

  10. Brush with more melted butter right after baking for a glossy, soft finish. Serve warm.

Tips

  • If you want extra sweetness, add 2 tablespoons of honey to the dough.

  • These rolls freeze well—bake, cool completely, wrap tightly, and reheat before serving.

  • For an even softer crust, place a small dish of water in the oven while baking to create steam.

  • Try them as slider buns with pulled pork or ham for a Hawaiian-style meal.

  • Use bread flour instead of all-purpose for a chewier texture.
