Black Eyed Peas Curry, also known as Lobia Curry, is a comforting, protein-rich Indian dish made with black eyed peas simmered in a lightly spiced onion-tomato gravy. Ingredients

  • 1 cup dried black eyed peas (lobia), soaked overnight

  • 3 cups water (for pressure cooking)

  • 2 tablespoons oil

  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds

  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped

  • 1 teaspoon ginger-garlic paste

  • 2 medium tomatoes, chopped or pureed

  • 1 green chili, chopped (optional)

  • ½ teaspoon turmeric powder

  • 1 teaspoon coriander powder

  • ½ teaspoon red chili powder

  • ½ teaspoon garam masala

  • Salt to taste

  • 2 tablespoons chopped coriander leaves

  • Juice of half a lemon

Instructions

1. Soak and Cook the Peas

Rinse the black eyed peas and soak them in enough water overnight or for at least 6 hours. Drain, then pressure cook with 3 cups of water and a pinch of salt for 3–4 whistles or until the peas are soft but not mushy. If using canned peas, rinse and drain, and skip this step.

2. Prepare the Masala

Heat oil in a pan. Add cumin seeds and let them sizzle. Add chopped onions and sauté until they turn golden brown. Add ginger-garlic paste and green chili. Cook for 1–2 minutes until the raw smell goes away.

3. Add Tomatoes and Spices

Add the chopped or pureed tomatoes to the pan. Cook until the mixture thickens and oil begins to separate from the sides. Add turmeric, coriander powder, red chili powder, and salt. Mix well and cook for 4–5 minutes on low heat.

4. Combine and Simmer

Add the cooked black eyed peas to the masala along with some of the water used during boiling. Stir and let it simmer on low heat for 10–12 minutes so the peas absorb the flavor. Adjust the water for your desired thickness.

5. Finish and Serve

Sprinkle garam masala and stir gently. Add lemon juice and fresh coriander just before serving.

Serve hot with plain rice, jeera rice, or roti. Black Eyed Peas Curry is hearty, filling, and satisfying—packed with protein and flavor from everyday ingredients. It’s one of those dishes that feels both comforting and nourishing in every bite.
