Mulled Cider Recipe

Warm, fragrant, and cozy, Mulled Cider is the ultimate drink for chilly days or festive gatherings. This comforting beverage combines apple cider with warming spices, citrus, and a touch of sweetness for a rich, aromatic flavor. It fills your home with a delightful scent and can easily be made with or without alcohol.

Cooking Time: 25 minutes

Servings: 6

Ingredients:

6 cups apple cider (not apple juice)

1 orange, sliced

4 whole cloves

3 cinnamon sticks

2 star anise

4 allspice berries (optional)

1 tablespoon brown sugar or honey (to taste)

1 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)

1/2 cup dark rum or bourbon (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Combine Ingredients:

In a large pot, pour in the apple cider. Add orange slices, cloves, cinnamon sticks, star anise, allspice, and brown sugar. Stir gently to mix.

  2. Simmer the Cider:

Bring the mixture to a simmer over medium heat, then reduce the heat to low. Let it gently simmer for about 20 minutes. Avoid boiling, as it can reduce the flavor of the cider.

  3. Add Vanilla and Alcohol (Optional):

Stir in vanilla extract for a smooth aroma. If using alcohol, add rum or bourbon at the end of simmering, just before serving.

  4. Strain and Serve:

Remove spices and orange slices using a fine strainer. Ladle the hot cider into mugs. Garnish each mug with a cinnamon stick or a fresh orange slice for presentation.

Tips:

  • For a stronger spice flavor, let the cider sit off heat with the spices for another 10–15 minutes before straining.

  • Add a splash of cranberry juice for a tart twist.

  • Make it kid-friendly by skipping the alcohol.
